ECKAN is working to help address a shortage of childcare available within the city of Ottawa by acquiring and operating a daycare facility located at 424 S. Poplar.    Previously the center was owned and operated by a private provider that had ceased operations, and was offered for purchase to ECKAN by Kansas State Bank located in Ottawa. The timing of the proposal was in line with ECKAN’s need to  establish a means of serving ten ECKAN Early Head Start positions the agency had been awarded in an expansion grant earlier this year. Nearly two-thirds of the purchase costs will be paid through the agencies Federal Early Head Start grant with  the remainder being financed by Kansas State Bank. Once operational, the center will serve ten ECKAN Early Head Start children in addition to six  children whose families meet selected income criteria. This facility will also serve as a location for ECKAN Head Start staff to gain valuable  experience needed as they work toward attaining various teaching credentials.
