YES WE CAN
We are one of the most diverse non-profit organizations in our 9-county service area. As we pursue our vision of Helping People; Changing Lives, we will work toward sustainable communities.
We will continue to be innovative and grow in exciting new directions that will help those who we work with to become self-sufficient and have a sense of community.
We will do this while maintaining our core programs.
We will also support efforts at the national level to reduce poverty by 50% in ten years. To this end, we believe that state and federal governments have a responsibility and role to play in the elimination of poverty.
At a minimum the following must take place: · Promote decent work and ensure economic security · Help people build wealth · Find ways to increase family stability · Increase investment in education and training · Ensure healthy people and places · Use the resources, experience, and knowledge that we have to eliminate poverty in our state and country · Ensure health care for those who need it · Affordable daycare · Progressive tax policies that will benefit lower and middle income taxpayers by asking everybody to pay their fair share · Revise the federal poverty guidelines to make them more relevant in today’s economy
Finally, we call for the creation of a statewide poverty commission to engage in a study of causes and conditions of poverty in Kansas, and how poverty might be reduced by 2018. Members of the commission should be appointed by the Governor, be bipartisan, and include a cross section of Kansans.
Three of the goals of the commission should be: · create and sustain a bipartisan and constructive environment in the state legislature to discuss issues and policy solutions for Kansas’ poorest families and communities, · explore typical and innovative poverty reduction solutions and initiatives that could serve as models for Kansas communities, and · create a state policy environment in which to engage families, communities, and institutions in developing comprehensive policy solutions for struggling Kansas families and communities.
As an agency and community, we must continue to be a catalyst for change. Helping people; changing lives. |
