Just Food Douglas County

Fighting hunger in our community

THANK YOU, DOUGLAS COUNTY!

bullet

February 2011: Just Food was on the brink of closing for lack of funding.

bullet

March 2011: Local and Kansas City news outlets told our story.

bullet

March-July 2011: The Douglas County community stepped in and raised more than $115,000. Just Food is now financially secure for the coming year.

Here is what your donations did:

bullet

served 1,800-2,000 individuals monthly through the food pantry (In June, the retail value of this food was $36,060.)

bullet

served 160-170 families monthly through the mobile food pantry (in July, 14,000+ lbs of perishables)

bullet

provided federal commodities to more than 150 seniors through CSFP (in July more than 3,600 lbs. of food)

bullet

provided federal commodities to more than 150 families through TEFAP (in July more than 5,000 lbs. of food)

bullet

provided 13 partner pantries/agencies with access to Harvesters’ low-cost food (in June, nearly 18,000 lbs)

And Just Food supporters donate more than money. Local produce farmers have donated thousands of pounds of fresh produce each month. It is available daily without charge to needy families. Large quantities of produce are also offered to partner pantries/agencies, and other agencies serving those in need so that fresh produce does not go to waste.

In addition, three local stores donate bread and baked goods at least weekly. These are available to clients daily.

The number of people served continues to grow, and the support received has made Just Food Douglas County’s food bank.

Our Mission

Just Food’s mission is to fight hunger in Douglas County by:

bullet

increasing access to public and private programs that provide food to children in need and their families.

bullet

strengthening community resources that connect children and families to healthy food.

bullet

improving families’ knowledge about available programs and how to get the most from limited resources.

bullet

providing opportunities for families to become self-sustaining to become contributing community citizens

Open five days a week, Just Food operates as the primary food bank resource for all of Douglas County as well as an emergency food pantry for low-income customers seeking food assistance. Just Food relies on the food and cash donations of the local community to sustain its operation. To donate to Just Food, go to www.justfoodfund.org.
